Every year, far away from the harsh, salt-strewn north, Gooding & Company sneaks off to rust-free Arizona to offer a wide range of pristine motors. From the technological innovations of the Bugatti EB110 to the artistry of the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, all facets of the collector car hobby are represented.
At its Scottsdale auction this month, RM Sotheby’s will offer a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO originally sold in the U.S. but rarely driven. The car shows less than 2,900 miles after passing through the hands of several collectors. The pre-sale estimate is $3.2m-$3.6m.
Straight from the garage to the bed of an enclosed transport, classics, exotics, and collectible cars skip the salt for the dry heat of Scottsdale Arizona. Last January, Scottsdale saw over 3000 automobiles cross the auction block in less than a week.
The Gooding & Company Scottsdale auction in January will offer a 1973 911 T Targa, one of 1,300 made for the U.S., with 21,000 documented original miles. Offered with no reserve, the car has a pre-sale estimate of $130k-$160k.
Eight-figure prices for Ferraris are usually associated with Monterey or Scottsdale auctions, but the second-highest auction price for 2018, $22,000,500, went for a 1956 Ferrari 290 MM at the RM Sotheby’s Petersen Museum auction in December.
Nissan U.S.A. brought the GTR-50 prototype here for Monterey Car Week festivities, and company spokesman Josh Clifton told Premier, “The response was really positive, so it’s possible that at least one GT-R50 will find a home in the U.S.”

Aston Martin’s SUV, called DBX, is arriving late next year. The company recently released the first official photos of the vehicle, and even though it was covered in camouflage (plus sponsorship decals), the distinctive shape comes through.
The RS America was one for the purists, and just 701 were made. The upshot today: Hagerty shows an average value of $204,000 for an “excellent” condition RS America, or about four times the average value for an “excellent” condition Carrera 2 of the same vintage.
