The Automotive Accolade
Since 1950, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been a showcase for the world’s most beautiful automobiles. It began as a road race and competition for new vehicles, extolling custom coachwork and mechanical ingenuity. Over time it has evolved into a celebration of motors past, for those pre-1972 at the leading-edge of artistry and motorsport. Entrance is by invitation only, and requires that the car has not been shown at another concours.
Their judges and selection panel are the arbiters of automotive importance, raising metal into royalty. The Pebble’s Best-in-Show, anointed in confetti and ribbons, joins the pantheon of history’s most important cars.
The automobiles honored with an invitation must be fully functional in addition to rare and unblemished. They must enter the green on their own power and, should a tie occur, must successfully complete the 60-mile Tour d’Elegance to earn the title. The pre-requisites are hard to meet, but the true difficulty lies in the crucible of judging; class-specific experts scour every inch of the vehicle and make no concession for dust or dirt.
For the Love of Cars
For the first time, Citroen will be The Pebble’s featured marque, paying homage to the spunky French manufacturer that dared to be different. Pre-war Rolls Royce, vintage-era Sporting Cars, and the Grand Tourers of Ferrari are just a few of the classes. Every car on the green has a story to tell, from a Maharaja’s Phantom to an inventor-turned-racer’s McLaren.
While the standards are high, the event remains a cheerful exhibition for car lovers. Even rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm for last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and the clouds did little to dim the shine of the 100 honored automobiles. The forecast looks clear and cool for this year, but be sure to double check the weather when you’re drafting your itinerary.
