The 2018 Cavallino Classic
Now in its 27th year, the Cavallino Classic is a five day celebration of Ferrari and the vintage automobile, combining charitable galas, automotive displays, and wheel-to-wheel racing. While there may be fewer new exotics on display this year, the vintage motors competing in Sunday’s Concorso d’Eleganza are the real draw. Each Ferrari on the green is a legend in its own right, with extensive provenance, originality, and style. These are the sort of cars never offered for public sale, rarely seen and only shown at events of suitable status.
This year’s featured marque is Mercedes-Benz, honoring the 300 SL with its own concours class and private laps at Palm Beach International Raceway. That very same pavement will play host to dozens of cruise laps for registered classics as well as vintage races. The latter offer a rare chance to see priceless artifacts driven as intended, highlighting their handling, speed, and driving character.
If you find yourself tired of prancing ponies by the end of the week, look no further than Classic Sports Sunday, a charitable display of 120 pristine vintage motors on the Breakers’ lawn. Just to be shown is an honor, requiring an invitation from the Classic.
Unfortunately, the reception at Jet Aviation will be canceled this year due to the need to secure the tarmac for presidential visits.
