Scottsdale’s Collector Car Auction Week
Ever since 1971, when Tom Barrett and Russ Jackson held the first classic car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the city and its surrounding communities have become world-famous for hosting the many collector-car auctions and events taking place each January. In addition to providing a welcome break from the winter cold suffered by most of North America, Scottsdale’s January auction week also provides a reading on the state of the collector-car market and its most important trends for the rest of each year.

Averaging nearly 255 million dollars in total sales since 2013 with a high of almost 295 million recorded in 2015, the Scottsdale auctions also provide a massive economic benefit to the region beyond the raw aggregate sale numbers. In fact, billions are collectively earned by airlines, hotels, bars, restaurants, retailers, classic-car dealers, restorers, vehicle detailers, shippers, leasing and finance companies and many other businesses serving the flood of collector-car spectators and market participants each January.

A January Tradition
While the Scottsdale auctions have long formed a strong January tradition for everybody involved, recent changes keep the space very interesting. New players are entering the market, particularly the recently-formed combination of Leake Auctions, established in 1964, with Burnaby, British Columbia’s giant heavy-equipment auctioneer, Ritchie Brothers. MAG (Motorsport Auction Group) is a new player this year, teaming up with Silver Auctions of Arizona. Russo and Steele, celebrating 20 years in business, returns to Scottsdale for 5 nights with over 800 collector cars to be offered. Scottsdale’s Barrett-Jackson returns with an amazing docket, as do Bonhams, Gooding and Company, RM Sotheby’s and Worldwide Auctioneers, which has relocated to Singh Meadows in Tempe, next to Scottsdale. A common thread among the various auctions this year will be the offering of many stunning modern supercars, particularly Ford’s current GT and a host of McLaren road models.
