The Crown Jewel of the Monterey Peninsula
The third annual Carmel Mission Classic is Monterey’s only source for physical, spiritual, and automotive sustenance. It’s a laid-back car show set around the timeless architecture of Carmel Mission Basilica. Proceeds benefit local charities as well as the restoration of the Basilica. The Basilica is a national landmark that has occupied the Monterey peninsula for almost two and a half centuries.
However, its primetime spot in the Monterey Car Week assures the quality of cars shown far surpasses any town charity drive. In addition, the Petersen – one of the world’s largest automotive museums – is a supporter and enters cars into the Classic annually. This event is quickly gaining popularity. Further, it has become a favorite of many due to its intimate size and elegant atmosphere.
Awards are given to the most exceptional cars, but judging is informal and based more on appeal than the intense scrutiny of the nearby Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The highlight of the show is the ceremonial blessing of the cars by the pastor of the Basilica and the Bishop of Monterey.
This year’s featured cars include a Pagani Huayra, Ford GT, Jaguar D-Type, and a desirable Porsche 356 Super 90. A complementary wine tasting pairs local vintages from the Monterey peninsula’s most prestigious vineyards with these distinguished automobiles. The gentle flourishes of a harpist help enhance the Basilica’s ambience, and gourmet food prepared by a local chef is available should all the elegance whet your appetite. If you’re thinking of attending this event, or any other in Monterey, be sure to check out our itinerary for a day-by-day schedule.
