The 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
The 18th Fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links becomes a time machine for one day only during the capstone concours of the Monterey Car Week. This fleeting event packs the exemplars of the golden age of automobiles onto the well-groomed strands of California’s central coast. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the genuine article. It attracts the finest cars from around the world. From antique sports cars that remain wholly original, to the winningest of vintage racecars.
The judging sets the standard for concours around the world, analyzing each car for its originality, condition, rarity, and historical or stylistic import. The concours green would be a gauntlet of embarrassment for entrants. Were they not so carefully vetted before receiving an invitation. The cars invited are forbidden to be displayed at a concours or auctions directly prior to Pebble Beach. Additionally, preference is given to those cars that have not recently shown at a large-scale concours. Considering the incomparable reputation of this event, many owners of these top-tier automobiles prefer to keep them squirreled away for private use until their time to shine in Monterey.

Cars are only able to enter from 1972 and earlier. That is, except for extenuating circumstances, but over 20 different classes of judging keep the field is quite varied. In addition to the regular medley of classes, this year’s concours will feature the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Miura and the Ford GT40’s LeMans sweep. In addition, highlights the products of the Italian marque Bizzarrini.
Many of these motors are pampered show cars, more accustomed to the inside of a climate-controlled garage than the open road. However, they must still be fully operational and capable of gaining the field under their own power. Further emphasizing the importance of functionality, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance is a parade of concours competitors that provides a spectacle as well as a way of ensuring each car is mechanically fit. Should there be a tie between two cars in a certain class, the ribbon goes to the automobile that successfully completed this scenic jaunt.
Proceeds from the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and its associated events enrich the lives of local children. This is through literacy, education, and extra-curricular programs.
