An Automotive Event with a Heart of Gold
If you’re not in California for Monterey Car Week, or just looking to avoid the traffic at Pebble Beach, Michigan has a world-class concours to break the routine. For over ten years, the Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance has attracted nearly 100 well-vetted vehicles. They range from the brass era to the late post-war period. With names like Rolls-Royce, Pierce Arrow, and Porsche regularly gracing the field, Lake Bluff isn’t a runoff of those ineligible for Pebble Beach. Last year’s Best of Show, a pre-war boat-tailed Packard, is proof.
Appropriate to its vicinity to America’s automotive heartland, showcased vehicles are predominantly from domestic marques. This is a refreshing change of pace from the normal, European dominated concours. This year’s featured marque is Nash, an American innovator and producer of the Pinin Farina-designed Nash Healey roadster and the adorable Nash Metropolitan. Additionally, classes include the Art Deco designs of the Chrysler and Desoto Airflow as well eclectic vintage squad cars.
Though the entrance fee is extremely affordable, the sheer number of spectators allows the Lake Bluff Concours to make considerable contributions to local charities. This year’s charity is Hospice at Home, a non-profit organization aiding residents of St. Joseph County, regardless of their ability to pay.
