The Kiawah Island Motoring Retreat
This weekend, the private island of Kiawah – just minutes from downtown Charleston, South Carolina – floods with automotive aficionados for a three-day retreat amid the dunes and lapping tide. The retreat kicks off on Friday with a convoy of fifty vintage cars touring the surrounding islands. The day ends with a true Lowcountry oyster roast and beer tasting. Saturday’s “Cars on Kiawah” is a car show with a picturesque backdrop that boasts free admission in addition to the 200 noteworthy cars on display.
These events, and more, lead up to Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance, where more than 100 of the world’s finest vintage autos will be judged for their originality, preservation, and historic value. If the view of the cars isn’t enough, the Concours is held at the stunning Ocean Course. This coastal golf course, situated above the dunes, is home to the most seaside holes of any course in the Northern Hemisphere.
Keith Martin, well-known enthusiast and publisher of Sports Car Market, will preside over the Concours d’Elegance as this year’s Master of Ceremonies. Proceeds from the event benefit three charities – The Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic, The Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding Program, and The Kiawah Conservancy. With deserving local beneficiaries that help support and maintain the Lowcountry, this retreat is a sustainable mecca for car buffs.
